What To Expect - Portrait Sessions

Style

Ikona Photography has adopted an all-digital workflow because of the maturity it has reached and the flexibility it offers. We believe that the picture does not stop with the session, therefore we personally digitally enhance each picture using the latest available technology: only the photographer that was present when the picture was taken knows how the light and the colors were really at that time. This approach allows for an artistic and a very personalized touch. We mostly photograph using outdoor natural light whenever possible, which adds spectacular color and depth to the image. If the weather does not allow outdoor sessions, indoor, at your location or in our studio can be an excellent alternative. When photographing on-location please keep in mind that, if photographing a child, kids are most comfortable and spontaneous in familiar surroundings.

Preparing for the session

We will start with a consultation meeting a few days before your scheduled appointment, to go over the details of the session and make it the most enjoyable experience. This meeting can be held at our studio or over the phone and will take about 30 minutes.

At the session please be ready at the agreed time if it is your location, or arrive on-time if it is an outdoor session. The session will not be rigid and formal. Especially if kids are the main subject, they will have ample breaks to make this experience a playful situation. While photographing we will try to blend with the environment, as this approach produces the most spontaneous moments, especially with kids; in other circumstances we will make sure that we maintain a productive dialogue about what is happening to keep a very active flow. The entire session will be about two hours.

After the session

We will contact you as soon as your proofs will be ready, typically about two to three weeks after your session. We will also have a post-session vision and commentary consultation, where we will discuss the images. Ordering your pictures will take place at the post-session meeting.

Additional important details will be communicated during your pre-session meeting.

What to wear and bring

The choice of clothing is extremely important and, at the same time, extremely personal. Sessions are usually informal, casual look is welcomed. Clothes with some texture are a good choice, with corduroy, monochrome or fine patterned sweaters, turtlenecks, for the colder months. Shirts with non-intrusive patterns (please avoid stripes and large geometric designs), dresses for girls or denim for boys are good choices. A combination kaki and light colored shirt is a timeless favorite, jeans and white shirts are excellent for a more casual look. If you are coming for a family session or siblings are being pictured together, color coordination is best, with a range of tones that are close to one another. Feel free to discuss more in detail these elements during your pre-session meeting. As most of the sessions are outdoor, outfit change is usually not possible, unless the session is in our studio or at your location, in which case please feel free to plan a clothes change. It is also a good idea to have any accessory you like during the session, such as a hat, a scarf or a favorite toy for kids. You may also bring any personal item you feel necessary to revive your look. As the photo style is to record your precious moments as naturally as possible, please avoid makeup on the little ones. For teenagers and adults a light makeup is fine as long as your natural look is not altered by it.
